About

TheEuroMarine Summer School “Emerging topics in coastal marine ecosystems” will be aimed at PhD students, most of whom will belong to the EuroMarine network.

This course mixes theoretical formation with practical laboratory sessions, field trips, oceanographic instruction, and demonstration of unmanned observation technology. Topics include some related to climate change such as marine heatwaves and ocean acidification, others with global impacts such as invasive species, microplastics and emerging pollutants, climate change mitigation issues such as blue carbon, marine observation technologies such as unmanned vehicles, and finally a relevant part mixing management and social sciences in the study of the marine protected areas MPAs.

KEY OBJECTIVES

The EuroMarine Summer School is oriented towards PhD students mostly from the EuroMarine network. The main objective is to achieve a broad and interdisciplinary training in a series of emerging topics in the study of coastal marine ecosystems.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

The expected learning outcomes will be a broad and interdisciplinary training in the topics that are currently growing in coastal marine sciences, so that the PhDs, apart from their specific research topic, will acquire a broad vision of climate change, mitigation measures, anthropogenic impacts, the use of marine technologies and the management of Marine ProtectedAreas. As important as the specific training, are the transversal skills of sharing experiences with students from other universities and a wide range of lecturers in an international environment for 10 days.

EXPECTED IMPACT

The course deals with topics closely related to the Decade of the Oceans and the SDGs, especially SDG14 life below water.

The Summer School will provide a comprehensive training of 25 PhDs face-to-face and others online in broad and cross-cutting topics, thus training the generation of researchers of 2030.

REGISTRATION

Applicant will be requested to supply the title and abstract of their PhD project, a letter of interest, certificate of English proficiency (B1 minimum), and an abbreviated CV format (max 4 pages).

A total of 25 places will be offered, 17 will be reserved for EuroMarine members, 5 for non-members, and 3 for universities from the SEA EU alliance that do not belong to EuroMarine. The number of online participants will be capped at ~25.
